Angelman syndrome is a neurogenetic disorder characterized by developmental delays, intellectual disability, speech impairment, movement and balance issues, seizures, sleep disturbance, microcephaly and a characteristic behavioral phenotype. Speech development is significantly delayed or absent. Angelman syndrome is associated with a unique behavioral phenotype characterized by frequent laughter, smiling, and a happy disposition. Individuals may exhibit hyperactivity, a short attention span, and a fascination with repetitive movements such as hand-flapping or finger-flicking.
Rett syndrome is a similar neurogenetic disorder that primarily affects females and is characterized by a period of normal development during the first 6 to 18 months of life followed by a regression of acquired skills, including motor and language abilities, irregular breathing patterns, seizures, scoliosis, growth delay, microcephaly, autonomic dysregulation, and moderate to severe intellectual disability.
