Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system. The condition affects several regions of the brain, especially the substantia nigra, which controls balance and movement. The first symptom of Parkinson's disease is often trembling or shaking of a limb. Symptoms also include rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and torso, slow movement or an inability to move, and impaired balance and coordination. Parkinson's disease can also affect emotions and thinking ability and include psychiatric symptoms such as depression and visual hallucinations. Parkinson's Disease affects more than 1 million people in North America, with the late-onset form (after age 50) being the most common. Most cases probably result from a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors. Approximately 15% of people with Parkinson's disease have a family history, with many genes potentially causing familial issues.
