PCR-based assays are a reliable method for detecting viral pathogens in a research setting, but they can be time-consuming and dependent on the availability of reagents and plastics. An alternative method using the Omni Bead Ruptor Elite bead mill homogenizer allows for the detection of the virus from a swab using only mechanical lysis and a direct-to-PCR methodology. This two-step process reduces sample preparation time, requires no reagents, and could potentially also help labs practice greener methods by reducing the amount of plastic consumables needed. This method ultimately reduces the potential cost and time associated with performing a viral detection assay compared to more traditional PCR-based methods and workflows.
