Syrian hamsters as a small animal model for SARS-CoV-2 infection and countermeasure development

Syrian-hamsters-512x288

With the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and its impact globally, effective vaccines and therapeutics for coronavirus-induced diseases are urgently needed.

In this recent publication, Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a world-renowned virologist from University of Tokyo and his colleagues used microCT imaging with the Quantum platform to assess the replicative ability and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 in the lungs of Syrian hamsters. Both the model and the use of microCT have the potential to aid in the development of vaccines, immunotherapies, and antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2.
