Homogenization and downstream analysis of cannabis using the Omni Bead Ruptor 96 bead mill homogenizer

Homogenization and downstream analysis of cannabis

Chronic pain is a clinical condition experienced by many, including those suffering from cancer-associated pain, neuropathic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia. As a growing epidemic and public health concern, research is on-going for pain management strategies. Amongst the treatment options, acetaminophens and NSAIDs are sometimes leveraged with physical therapy. In more recent years, natural cannabinoids have also been explored for their potential benefits against a range of clinical conditions, such as pain and inflammation.  Active areas of research include the quantitation of their cannabinoid profiles of various hemp plants components, such as flowers, as well as their medicinal matrices for consumption methods.

In this study, upstream sample homogenization via the Ommi Bead Ruptor 96 bead mill homogenizer was performed on hemp flowers for the extraction and quantification of 11 cannabinoids using HPLC-UV analysis. Four different homogenization parameters were evaluated and particle distribution analysis (%) was conducted after sample prep. Finally, concentration of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) was determined from all four parameters evaluated.
