Hair samples are often used in forensic analysis research, including detection of performance-enhancing drugs like testosterone. Traditional methods of hair disruption for analysis have drawbacks, but bead milling, a method involving high-speed shaking of a sample with small beads, has been effective. The Omni Bead Ruptor Elite bead mill homogenizer, coupled with sonication, was used to extract free testosterone from equine hair samples. This method maintained the integrity of the testosterone, allowing for accurate measurement. The findings suggest bead milling is a promising technique for hair sample preparation in steroid or hormone analysis.
